Choose to Challenge

As the leader of an all-women PR team, I can’t wait to see this lineup of powerhouse women communicators announced by the Biden Harris Administration in action. It’s no secret women dominate the PR and communications industry in the US, making up about 70 percent of the profession. What you may not know is that women hold just 30 percent of the industry’s top jobs. In my comms career, I’ve experienced undisguised pay inequity, opportunity gaps, and systems and cultures that create barriers for women and especially working moms.

That’s why I’m so proud of the PR firms and especially female founders like Jenna Cooper, APR⁠, Kate FinleyFilomena Fanelli, and Marilyn Horn  who are shaking things up and creating non-traditional, more inclusive PR firm workplaces and cultures. And I admire trailblazers like Serilda Summers-McGee, MBA, M.Ed who are helping companies do better.

The theme of our next International Women’s Day – Monday, March 8, 2021 – is #ChooseToChallenge. As we celebrate the achievement of the White House comms team, let’s also celebrate the achievement of women communicators in our networks and the courage of leaders who #ChooseToChallenge
